Time for a re-read.

It must be about forty years since I last read Dune. At the time it was by far the longest book I'd ever read. I'm about 50 pages in and enjoying the return.

  1. I am quite curious about the new film, and have even considered if I should re-read the novel. When I did read it before, I felt it was impressive, but had that teen wish fulfillment tinged with dreams of grandeur and unhealthy obsession with strength and power that old sf often have. It felt politically repulsive.

  2. I as well am reading it again after about 40 years. I am about half way through it. I wanted to read it so I am ready for the movie. So far I am really enjoying it.
Are you planning on seeing the movie as well?

  4. I just finished my re-read. Just as good as when I read it the first time decades ago. Enjoy!!

  5. I'm all "Dune'd" out with the never ending sequels I've read by Herbert's son and KJA.
    But I'll keep reading them.
Looking forward to the movie though.

  6. I read it for the first time a while back (I've seen the David Lynch film as well.) It really holds up well and you realise how derivative of Dune many later SF books were.

  7. I definitely enjoy the first three books. Villeneuve has reportedly said that he'd like to do Dune Messiah (with the upcoming film only covering the first half of Dune and Dune PT II greenlit). Still fond of the SyFy adaptions.

  8. I am listening to the Audible edition before checking out the movie.

  9. being a sci fi freak for about 50 years it was the one classic novel i had never read and decided recently, before the movie release i would give it a try. i have to say i was very impressed, it was incredible but so are the sequels, and surprisingly the second book completely inverts the first. i found this technique unique, and in perspective quite an accurate portrayal of the idea of saviors. what a surprise this series was and then again, no wonder people love it.
i liked the movies and the tv series but the books are very well written and constructed.
