New Prefect Dreyfus story

In advance of Elysium Fire, which appears at the end of this month, I've written a short story featuring Prefect Dreyfus, and which I hope will serve as a gentle introduction to the world of Panoply and the Glitter Band for those who have yet to read the first novel.

You can read "Open and Shut" over at the Gollancz blog:

I hope you enjoy it.

  1. Enjoyable indeed. The Prefect/Aurora Rising is one of my favorites, so I am greatly looking forward to Elysium Fire!

Also, I'm partway through your Zima Blue collection at the moment. All of the stories have been great; I'm particularly fond of the two set in Merlin's universe. I've got The Iron Tactician, and I'll be reading that once I've finished with Zima Blue (which, by the way, would make an excellent band or album name).

  2. Did the job for me. I had not read The Prefect before reading this and have now gone and grabbed the audible version. Cheers.

  3. Great story. Brings back find memories of The Prefect, which I'll most likely re-read shortly.

  4. Thanks! I'll enjoy reading that. I love your work, especially The Prefect, it is one of my favourites. I often listen to your novels as audiobooks. I love the way you describe the physics of what is happening so vividly. I look forward to reading (and listening to) many more books to come.
    Happy new year

  5. Hi. Just thought I would bring to your notice what seems to be an error in the listing of "The Prefect" novel - on Amazon, Kobo and Google they all show this with the title "Aurora Rising" instead of "The Prefect". Odd - as I am currently reading "Aurora Rising" series by G. S. Jennsen (another excellent epic sf series). I'm looking to get the e-book version of "The Prefect" to reread in prep for the sequel, and was disheartened that it wasn't - and then I noticed on Kobo the cover image showed the correct title. I'm sure with the upcoming release of the sequel, many may also be looking to get the first. Cheers & you are one of my favourite sf authors!

  9. Chilling in the bath listening to Elysium Fire.

I have no idea how you can sit there and come up with a series of words that become magic when put together in this order.

    Thanks

  10. Curious if you've seen the news surrounding a brain uploading startup: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/610456/a-startup-is-pitching-a-mind-uploading-service-that-is-100-percent-fatal/. Truth mirroring fiction!
