Talking Dune on R4

I was on Radio 4's Today program earlier this morning talking about Dune, both the book and its various adaptations. You can catch me just after 8.20 (2 hrs 20 into the program):

  1. Hi, I really enjoyed that, very interested.

I did have a unrelated questions- is Belladonna Nights going to be released by an English publisher? I was going to buy it from subterraneanpress but their shipping was about $60

  2. Hi Matt

Thanks for listening. We did a pre-record at 6.15 so it was an early start for me.

No, there are no plans for a UK edition of Belladonna Nights.

    best,

    Al

    1. Is the limited edition hardcover the only version of the book? I could have sworn I saw a Kindle pre-order, because I remember it was listed for an Oct. 18 release date in the US, which I thought was odd since Inhibitor Phase was slated for Oct. 12.

So either things changed or my imagination is playing tricks on me.

    3. Short story collections are a tough proposition at the best of times, and this ain't the best of times. I'm grateful enough that the book exists.

  3. In the interests of saving 120 seconds of precious time I'll point out that the awesome bit actually starts at 2h22m into the recording.

  4. I look forward to your comments when you see the new adaption (I was hoping the BBC had actually sent you along ;-) (also your thoughts on the adaption of Foundation)(Can't complain about the art direction or the money they've spent on it).

Inhibitor Phase kept me up very late - extremely unputdownable!

  6. Sorry for the off-topic post, but got an email about the new RS edition by SubPress, and was curious about the differences between this one and the Foruli one from a few years ago (I proudly own Number 2 of that one). Thanks!

    1. They're very different beasts; I haven't seen the Sub Press one yet but I've seen some of the Marc Simonetti artwork and it's very beautiful, whereas the Foruli was a boxed edition which had my paintings and drawings. Both equally handsome in different ways, I would suggest.

  7. Happy to also see that Sub Press is doing a special edition of Revaluation Space - was hoping that there'd be some sort of special edition (esp as I only have your first few books in paperback).

  8. Hi thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m in the process of working my way through your novels (mostly on Audible) and I’m loving the breadth of the Revelation world. I think you’re so right that Dune affords a sort of crossover option into Sci-Fi for many readers. Unfortunately too many people still dismiss the genre and ignore the art, humour and depth of characterisation within. I’was really impressed by this latest Dune movie and I can hardly wait until the next piece. I love being able to lose myself in entire worlds of words - so thanks for your review and your ongoing canon of work!

    Matthew
