Congrats on the release of Halcyon Years! I live in the US (January release) but I have a friend living in England who bought it today and is shipping it my way 🙃
Just finished Halcyon Years and absolutely loved it ! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us in the future. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2026.
Just started Halcyon and just wanted to pass along my appreciation at your latest evolution in prose. You've always had killer metaphors and you're capable of beautiful turns of phrase, but this feels like something new, even Mitchellian (as in David) at times. Combined with the strangeness of Yuri Gagarin as a "jack in the box" protagonist, it gives Halcyon -- the ship, the world -- a dreamlike quality. I'm very glad to have this book on a lazy day after Christmas as my area is about to get snowed in. Cheers, AR.
Finished Halcyon Years yesterday and really enjoyed it. IMO Yuri was one of your best characters, the book was very respectful of the real life Yuri Gagarin, and I love stories set aboard generation ships. You inspired me to do more reading on Gagarin's brief but memorable life. He was among the best of us, that's for sure.
One thing did occur to me, since I know you're also an artist: have you considered including maps for stories like this? I figure you had something sketched out for your own reference, but there were times when I thought a map would be helpful as I tried to picture the layout of Halcyon and the spatial relationships between points of interest.
Happy New Year, AR, and thanks again for allowing all of us to spend a brief amount of time in the fantastic worlds you create.
I'm wondering if you made a conceptual map of the Halcyon in preparation for the book. As a reader I've been able to piece together a fair amount without one, but am curious.
Loved seeing all the intricate details. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI wondered a bit about the lights when you talked about the model, but now I see why you bothered!
