Map of the Revelation Space universe
Reader Richard Terrett sent me this rather excellent map of the Revelation Space universe (click to embiggen, of course). Thanks, Richard! Reminds me, too - about time I did another RS story. This year, maybe?
I've actually just re-read the core 3 in the RS universe and now it's on to the Prefect and CCity. I'd be one happy reader to have more adventures set there. I'd also love to see more set in the House of Suns universe and of course I look forward to more of the Poseidon's Children books. Ah hell, just keep writing and I'll keep reading.
I am on my third Revelation book (Absolution Gap), love the series. I have Chasm City, The Prefect, Galactic North as well as Diamond Dogs/Turquoise Days waiting to be read on my shelf. I also enjoyed House of Suns and would love to see a sequel !
I am certain you would find something worthwhile to say in RS again, it's a glorious canvas afterall. However I would worry that it's all getting a bit fractal, finding a new unexplored area to open up and expand?
I would love to find out what happened to Avenger though, tell us more tales about the Spicans, and their plans for the galaxy.
Or a sequal to House of Suns, that would be good too :P
It's fascinating seeing this map, it really puts things into perspective. Ultras travel for years between these stars, and in galactic terms they are our very near neighbours.
More in the Revelation Space universe? YES PLEASE!
I’d be really, really, really interested in buying this as a poster. Something around about A3 size would be ideal. Failing that, a high-DPI PDF so we could print our own?
I’d also love it if Alastair could shed some light on the locations of the unknown-but-important stars and planets, just for the sake of completeness.
If you do return to the Revelation Space universe then I've got my fingers crossed for a sequel to The Prefect, there are so many unanswered questions at the end of the book, and it would be great to tie it in closer to the other RS novels.
Though if I could pick one book - I'd go for a House of Suns sequel - that book was sheer poetry and everyone I lend it to tears through it and hands it back to me asking - "but what happens next?"
To be honest, I wouldn't go back into the RS universe if it was only to settle unanswered questions - most of which are either best left unanswered, I suspect, or at least have implicit answers. I'd only want to do it if I felt that I could significantly expand the narrative space, rather than closing it down (which is what answers tend to do). That sounds more pessimistic than I intend it, though. I just suspect that if and when I do return to the RS universe, it's highly unlikely that I'll be setting out to resolve or clarify any of it.
I agree. I feel that 'Galactic North' does an excellent job of providing some implied answers while raising news ones at the same time. I don't think we as readers need any more answers in terms of the narrative's ending, but it is clear, as you have mentioned, that there is a lot of space for the narrative to be expanded. I am interested to see how you will accomplish this, as I am sure you have already been contemplating it for some time.
Excellent map, by the way. Thanks for making it, Richard.
YES YES YES PLEEEEEAAAAASE DO ANOTHER REVELATION SPACE STORY!!!! That universe has been my favorite SF world since I read the Revelation Space and I've been dying to go back since I finished The Prefect and Galactic North. I love the short stories, but a novel would be even better if you think you've got another one in you!
Another RS story this year? Yes please Alastair!

Now I wonder what the RS universe would look like in, say, Astrosynthesis.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! Oh, how I miss Revelation Space!! :-D
ReplyDeletenono. House of Suns sequel first. Then you can go wild with RS. House of Suns is a better book than RS and it deserves your time first :)
ReplyDeleteAgreed.. need another RS story..

ReplyDeleteYes! Take my money!!!
ReplyDeleteI *just* finished rereading the entire RS story line. If you publish another story, I just might have to do it all over again. ;~)
ReplyDeleteThat old thing? Don't bother. Only do it if you really want to.
ReplyDelete(walks away whistling and trying to appear casual, looking back over shoulder wondering if the bluff worked...)
Can Chasm City be adapted to another medium? A game or a movie, perchance?
ReplyDeleteI'd be perfectly fine with sequels in Revelation Space or House of Suns! I may have to reread House of Suns anyway! :)
ReplyDeleteNah, we don't no more stinkin' Revela--
ReplyDeleteYES! PLEASE!!!!
