With Dr Karl

I was a guest on two of Dr Karl's radio shows - Triple J and BBC Five Live, both on thursday 9th September. Podcasts are (or will be) up here shortly:

Dr Karl is a national institution in Australia and a great bloke as well; it was a delight to sit in with him and I hope we get to do it again sometime. Thanks to Brendan Fredericks and Caroline Pegram for a great day, and to the ABC staff for making it all run smoothly.

  1. You are very good at explaining these concepts without sounding patronising or dumbing it down too much. You should do this kinda thing more often.

  2. I agree with closedmouth. You'd make a great physics lecturer.
Loved your talk at the Royal Observatory Greenwich last year, by the way. More of the same, please.

  3. Glad I didn't come across as too much of an idiot and/or patronising.

  4. I third the motion, these were great to listen to.

It was wonderful to meet you at the Brisbane signing (I was the guy in the wheelchair from near the start of the line). We don't often have international authors visit, particularly those I would consider personal favourites, so our brief chat was really a special experience.

  5. Good to meet you, Ben - thanks for coming along. The Brisbane signing was really enjoyable, a good way to end my promotional mini-tour. Spent the next day being shown around the Glasshouse Mountains and environs by a friend. Great part of the world, I must say...can't wait to find an excuse to come back! Rainy in Sydney today; beginning my journey back to the UK tomorrow (with a wee detour into Malaysia).

  6. Another me too here. You didn't come across as either an idiot or patronising. Congratulations for keeping up with Dr Karl. He can go at a mile a minute sometimes.

As someone who bailed you up at Worldcon and at the signing in Sydney, thank you. It was an honour to meet you.

  7. Dear Alastiar

Although I'm not in Australia at the moment, I've caught Dr Karl's podcast (both the TripleJ and the Radio BBC Up All Night!).
Fantastic shows, you should think about doing this as a regular thing with Karl!
Well done. BTW, I just bought The Prefect on Amazon, I look forward to reading it on my Sony PRS-900. I must fess up, I removed the DRM protection, but only so I can convert it to EPUB and read it on my Sony device. Cheers and thanks for all the books!

  8. Too bad you didn't come to Perth during your tour, Alastair. There are some amazing places to visit over here too. Shame we are so isolated over here in the West, otherwise I would have been the first in line for one of your signings :(

  9. There was some possibility of visiting Perth at one point, but alas the schedule didn't allow it - I did however end up transferring between the international and domestic terminals when my flight to Sydney was cancelled - looked very nice, based on the short bus ride!

  11. The Sydney signing was the least well attended, as it happens. The rain might have been a factor - it was really hammering it down.
