For the Manic Pop Thrills podcast I picked a few songs for Mike to insert into the interview, but of course we didn't play them on the night. Listening to part 1 of the podcast now, I'm once again reminded of how utterly bloody fantastic this song is:
The video is equally marvellous and bizarre. I have the sense that it's referencing something, anyone know what? Some half-remembered East European childrens TV series, perhaps?
The new Ladytron album is out soon, single "White Elephant" is wonderful electro-psychedelic in the style of Broadcast. If you're up for some electropop, here's a Spotify playlist I've been putting together:

I read some comments on Youtube; some said this video referenced "Neverending Story" (esp. that creature).
ReplyDeleteAlso has shades of Monkey to it too

I asked some of my synthpop friends if they knew what this video was about. Someone pointed to an entry on wikipedia and though that it is from a Asian legend. Someone else said that he'dnoticed Chinese temples on the mountains & a raised wooden bridge at one point, and thought that perhaps it was a reference to the thousands of Chinese who laboured in snow & ice to build the railroads through mountains of US west in 1800s.
ReplyDeleteSo, nothing definite yet. Another friend of mine (who writes a music blog called The Electricity Club) has an interview with Ladytron lined up so I asked him to find out about this video directly from the source ;)
"kletva" from their album Velocifero is apparently a cover of a song from a Bulgarian's kids movie, so you never know
ReplyDeleteunrelated to the video except its to do with outer space and music composition, but thought it might intrigue. http://vimeo.com/24410924
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely rocking video. I loved it and also got the real time inspiration for my new video shoot.
ReplyDeleteGood to know about this album..I was really impressed by ur blog.
ReplyDeleteA belated thank you for bringing Ladytron to my greater attention some seven years ago. Looking back to 2011, when I found this blog post, I realise it was all the bigger a mistake that I've overlooked them before. Thanks. :-)
